I’m having so much fun playing around with these watercolors for the upcoming post.

I don’t like it

I’m working on a new story.  I made the first panel this morning, and I really don’t like it.  It’s really stiff and just not fun at all. I have to figure out what to change so I can make something more to my liking.

I made these little medallions to put on place cards for Thanksgiving.

drawing

In the past months I have spent a lot of time copying from photos and children’s books.  My favorite book illustrator is Helen Oxenbury.  I am learning a lot about line from her marvelous illustrations.

When I try to really draw, my drawings kind of fall apart. My confidence fails.  My drawing regresses.

Even if I stick with my naive style, I still have to learn a lot more about drawing.

Trying styles

I have started to look at other people’s work.  This is a drawing I did based on Danny Gregory’s approach.  It’s interesting, but it’s not me.

Me

What’s easy is drawing my cartoon self.  What’s hard is drawing machinery.  I’m also just starting to learn about watercolors.  The colors are not as brilliant, but I like the nuances that the watercolors add.

I'm so used to drawing myself.

Unsure

Starting again

About 4 months ago I stopped illustrating.  I’d lost interest, confidence and inspiration.  I’m ready to find the road back.  This blog will trace the contours of my path back to telling stories through drawings.
